A’MAREE’S DECKS

May 17th, 2021

ABOUT

We created these 6” x 6” decks (take-away information cards) for A’maree’s to highlight the available works that currently live there. One side of the card features an image of the work, and the reverse side contains the work’s label and information about its production.

These cards are art objects in themselves. Inspired by collectibles goods (like records, trading cards, etc.), each card is a limited available print that collectors can cherish. We will continue to add and remove cards to this deck as new pieces are created, and current pieces are sold.

Keep an eye out for these special cards and we look forward to sharing more at additional locations with you.

ABOUT

Our studio was invited to participate in “Green Dance Jam”, an event and exhibition hosted by RHC Ron Herman in Yokohama, Japan. Its mission is to spread awareness about the earth’s environment through fashion, art, sports, and lifestyle.

We were prompted to “make items which have a message about environmental issues, giving discarded items a second life as something beautiful, which is to be handed down to somebody and to be loved forever.”

In honor of Earth Day 2021, proceeds of the art that is sold is going to WWF Japan. So we set about creating not one, but two pieces because this is a cause we are very passionate about.

INTERVIEW

After you read the concept of our Green Dance Jam, what do you want to express with your work?  Is there a hidden message behind it?

As with my entire body of work, I aim for my pieces to physically communicate the optimistic resolution that is rooted in Aquaculture. In order to nurture the unique lifestyle that the Pacific Rim offers us and its visitors, we must harness our gratitude into loving action and take responsibility for maintaining its beauty.

Ocean pollution is a primary environmental concern in my local community of Newport Beach, California because it not only affects our beaches and our wildlife, but it directly affects us. Plastics in our oceans have a detrimental effect on its ecosystem, but when plastic breaks into smaller pieces, they become microplastics that are then consumed by the fish that we and our loved ones eat. Therefore, this issue is not separate from us, it is in us.

These works are literal in their imagery: the microplastics are mixed in with the waves, but it holds a deeper story. The plastic pieces were collected during a single walk on the beaches in my community, which was, unfortunately, more than enough for this project. By repurposing these plastics and utilizing vibrant colors, the work communicates an optimistic outlook that aims to encourage and inspire, rather than blame and scare, its viewers. Because it is when we unite in love, not fear, that we can create meaningful change to better our oceans.

What kind of environmental issues are you aware of? How do you think about the global environment today?

Being raised on the coast of Southern California, the well-being of our oceans has always been a very personal environmental issue to me. I am blessed to have many mentors from the agriculture, fashion, boating, and surfing industries who create innovative, sustainable products. They continually inspire me to incorporate these practices into my own life and work. I have watched how sustainable solutions create powerful conversations and inspired action, which has instilled in me a great amount of optimism. So even though there is much more work to be done, it is exciting to see the growing global awareness of our responsibilities as stewards of the planet.
